An amplifier is a musical instrument in its own right. The flexibility which tube technology offers, permits the electronics craftsman to shape the sound one way or another. The choice of components, types of circuits and methods of assembly give a specific sound result which is the manifestation of the cultural and aesthetic criteria of the person or group of people involved in the product.

It is obvious that the sound is the material the musician works with, what is not so obvious is that not all sound is musically efficient. For it to be musically functional the resulting sound must fulfil the qualitative requirements related to timbre, dynamic and projection. The notes must articulate clearly but they must flow naturally, the timbre range can be balanced or not but must always be within the human voice register, the dynamic response can be slow or fast but it must be efficient otherwise there is the risk of damaging the sonorous perspective. Projection of sound must not be done through volume but by omnidirectional diffusion. Without all these minimum requirements the musical passages do not respond and no matter how accurate the musician’s performance is, it will be sterile and senseless. All this is applicable to any type of music no matter whether orthodox or extravagant. It is irrelevant if it is blues, rock, classical, folk, etc… without a functional sound music simply does not exist.

The musically efficient sound is achieved with an empiric knowledge acquired through spending many hours talking to musicians and trying out different materials and circuits. The experience acquired makes up a package of resources which are used to reach specific aims in each case.

Once this has been attained, the practical aspects of the product must be concentrated on like reliability and robustness. With appropriate use and maintenance, the amplifier must not fail and its construction has to be tough since quite often it is an object not in a fixed installation but it is moved around from one place to another.

Another important aspect is to maintain the inherent noise of any electronic appliance to the minimum. To achieve this there are several techniques which take up time and money but they fulfil their purpose. The hum has to be almost inexistent since, as it is a specific frequency, it interferes negatively with the music; for this, among many other things it is necessary to get an optimum ground distribution and give special attention to the filament circuit. The hiss typical of any circuit although not as annoying can be minimized by using appropriate component values and polarization voltages. The rest of the noises should simply not exist in a quality amplifier.

Finally, the product must have a nice simple design, worthy of all the effort and work.
